JOB PURPOSE:   The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays a crucial role in assisting licensed nurses and medical staff in delivering high-quality patient-centered care. The CNA position at PBH is an essential member of the Medical Department, supporting psychiatric, primary care, and respite services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patient Interaction: Foster positive relationships with patients and their families, offering emotional support to promote a comfortable and caring environment.
  • Internal Communication: Coordinates with Medial Providers, Designated Crisis Responders (DCR), and other treatment members to ensure that care is consistent with individual treatment goals and discharge planning.
  • External Communications: Communicates accurately and efficiently with outside care providers including pharmacies, Emergency Department staff, laboratory services, and Primary Care Teams.
  • Medication Support: Provides oversight of medication self-administration and ensures the proper storage of medication in compliance with Department of Health and Washington Administrative Code regulations.
  • Vital Signs Monitoring: Regularly measure and record patients' vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiratory rate, and report any abnormalities to the nursing staff.
  • Patient Observation: Observe and report changes in patients' physical or mental conditions, such as behavior, mood, appetite, and sleep patterns, to the nursing team.
  • Infection Control: Adhere to infection control practices, maintain cleanliness and organization in patient areas, and assist with maintaining a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Patient Education: Provides education, support, and community referral services to assist in meeting treatment goals.
  • Confidentiality: Maintains familiarity with and handles client information in accordance with Federal Regulations (42 CFR, Part 2), the Revised Code of Washington (RCW 71.05.390 and RCW 71.24), and other applicable laws pertaining to confidentiality of client and staff information.
  • Physical Security: Maintains physical security of confidential materials and assigned Agency property.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates proficiency in utilization of the Agency's electronic medical record system.
  • Participates in relevant in-service and professional training in accordance with PBH policies and as directed by Supervisor.
  • Consistently maintains high standards of professional conduct in performance of job duties and in interpersonal interactions; presents self and the Agency in a positive and professional manner.
  • Maintains confidentiality of Agency and client information.
  • Provides support to the Nursing and Medical Departments assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Performs other tasks assigned by Supervisor.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Complete all documentation by the end of the shift per program standards.
  • Abides with attendance, punctuality, and professionalism expectations.
  • Must be able to remain calm under pressure.
  • Must be able to work with a diverse population.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, LICENSE(S), CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: High School Graduate or GED; successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant Program.

Licensure: Graduation from a Certified Nursing Assistant Program

Experience: One (1) year of clinical services with limited exceptions.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Psychiatric experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Essential:

  • Age specific knowledge and skill: Must be able to demonstrate the skills necessary to provide care to adult and pediatric patients.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to use a desktop computer, with proficiency in use of email, internet, and common business application software (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), and the agency electronic health record and other applicable software that relates to assigned duties.
  • Ability to use common office machines including copiers and fax machines.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluation situations, making decisions, and following written and oral directions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact in a pleasant and professional manner, both in-person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, work effectively, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision and with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to provide and receive constructive and well-directed instruction.
  • Ability to communicate and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with program participants displaying a wide range of challenging behaviors.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to and assess the needs of adults and older adults.
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift and carry 35-pound loads at a distance of fifty feet.
  • Frequent standing and walking throughout the facility.
  • Occasionally lifts supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains Standard Precautions and uses barriers (gloves, masks, aprons, goggles) appropriately in all potential exposures to body fluids or infectious waste.
